Our RE Curriculum
Religious Education is at the heart of our curriculum and is a core academic subject at St Joseph’s. Through RE, pupils develop knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith, encounter scripture, explore Catholic teaching and tradition, ask meaningful questions and consider how faith influences the way people live.
The Religious Education Directory
Our curriculum follows the Religious Education Directory – To Know You More Clearly. We use The Westminster Way materials from the Diocese of Westminster to support implementation of the RED. Learning is carefully sequenced from Nursery to Year 6 so that pupils build increasingly secure knowledge, vocabulary and theological understanding.

We have high expectations for teaching and learning in Religious Education. Teachers use scripture, questioning, discussion, religious vocabulary, creative responses and written work to help pupils develop their knowledge and understanding.

Assessment in Religious Education
Assessment in Religious Education is currently based on teacher assessment. Teachers draw on discussion, questioning, written work, creative responses, pupils’ knowledge of scripture, religious vocabulary, recall and their ability to make connections across learning.
Assessment is used formatively to identify what pupils know and understand and to inform future teaching. Book scrutiny, lesson visits, pupil voice and moderation support consistency and help leaders monitor standards.
Assessment in RE assesses pupils’ learning in Religious Education. It does not assess a child’s personal faith or the depth of their individual religious belief.
Other Religions & Worldviews
As part of the Religious Education Directory, pupils encounter and learn about other religions and worldviews. This develops accurate knowledge and understanding while fostering respect, dialogue and an appreciation of the religious and cultural diversity of our local community and wider world.
